. . . invites every Quaker meeting and church from around the world to celebrate World Quaker Day (WQD) on October 1, 2017. The theme, Gathering in Worship Around the Globe, focuses on uniting Friends in different parts of the world and from different traditions in one big virtual worshiping community.
Whatever you do as a worshiping community, we hope you will share this with others through FWCC. It can be very simple — a description, a poem, a short video from a mobile phone, a few photos — we will post them on this web site so that you can see what other churches and meetings were doing on the same day. There are three ways to let us know about your activities: Email items to us, post them to the FWCC World Office Facebook page, or Twitter, hashtag #wqd for posting to the website.
Finland Yearly Meeting organizes a joint Skype meeting for worship 12:30-13:30. The first half an hour is for introductions and share of thoughts, and the half an hour silent worship begins 13:30. The event is called Kveekari Hartaus on Skype.

We are writing this letter to express our grave concern regarding the ongoing deportations from Finland of persons who face death threats, violence and persecutions to Iraq and Afghanistan and other conflict areas. Our members and attenders are particularly concerned about the deportations affecting underage children and families to these countries. Having read numerous deportation decisions made by the Finnish Migration Service we are particularly concerned with recommendations included therein that deported persons change their names, professional and identity information in order to conceal, for instance, their religious orientation, a direct violation of their human rights.
Finland has always strived to be a leader internationally in advocating for high standards in recognition of human rights as set out in the Human Rights Treaties as well as the UN treaty on the Rights of the Child and the Treaty on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Finland is also noted for its advocacy of rights to family reunification as set out in the Helsinki Agreement of 1975. These rights are now often denied mainly due to onerous financial barriers and inadequate consular services.
We urge the Government of Finland to take measures to protect the reputation of Finland as human rights defender and cease the unjust deportations now ongoing during Finland’s 2017 Centenary Year.

Haluamme tällä avoimella kirjeellä ilmaista vakavan huolemme niistä kielteisistä turvapaikkapäätöksistä, joiden seurauksena Suomesta lähetetään Irakiin, Afganistaniin ja muille konfliktialueille ihmisiä, joita uhkaavat väkivalta vaino tai tappaminen. Jäsenemme ja osallistujamme ovat erityisen huolestuneita karkotuksista, joiden kohteina ovat alaikäiset lapset ja heidän perheensä. Luettuamme monia Migrin tekemiä kielteisiä päätöksiä meitä huolettavat myös viranomaisten antamat suositukset, että karkotettava muuttaisi nimeään, ammatti- ja henkilötietojaan voidakseen salata muun muassa uskonnollisen orientaationsa. Tämä on heidän ihmisoikeuksiensa räikeä loukkaus.
Suomi on aina pyrkinyt olemaan kansainvälisesti tunnettu siitä, että se edistää ihmisoikeuksien huomioimista monipuolisesti, niin kuin ne on ilmaistu ihmisoikeussopimuksissa, YK:n sopimuksessa lasten oikeuksista ja yleissopimuksessa kaikkinaisen rotusyrjinnän poistamiseksi. Maamme on myös tunnettu perheiden yhdistämisoikeuksien puolustamisesta vuoden 1975 Helsingin sopimuksen hengessä. Nämä oikeudet vaarantuvat nyt riittämättömillä konsulipalveluilla ja asettamalla kohtuuttomia taloudellisia rajoja.
Ystävien uskonnollinen seura Kveekarit ry. on osa 350v vanhaa maailmanlaajuista uskonyhteisöä, joka hiljainen hartaus pääasianaan puolustaa rauhaa, oikeudenmukaisuutta, yksinkertaista elämäntapaa, kohtuutta, totuutta ja ihmisoikeuksia. Suomalaiset ovat saaneet apua kansainväliseltä kveekareiden avustusjärjestöltä Lapin sodan jälkeen, jolloin American Friends Service Committee järjesti yhdessä Setlementtiliiton ja Suomen Huollon kanssa vapaaehtoisvoimin jälleenrakennustyöleirejä Suomen Lapissa syksystä 1945 syksyyn 1947. Käsite ”kveekari-velli” oli tuttu Lapin lapsille, joille kveekarit järjestivät kouluruokailua aikana, jolloin kaikesta, myös ruoasta oli pula.
Tämä avoin kirje on toimitettu Suomen pääministerille, ulkoministerille, sisäministerille ja kaikkien eduskuntaryhmien puheenjohtajille sekä STT:lle.
2.10. vietetään Maailman kveekaripäivää. Kveekareita ympäri maailman kannustetaan osallistumaan tuolloin millä tahansa pienellä tai suurella tavalla, joka tuntuu oikealta, itsekseen tai yhteisöinä.
Tämän vuoden teema on ”Uskon inspiroimana, yhdessä todistaen maailmassa”, jonka myötä edistämme Maailman kveekarineuvoston tavoitetta yhdistää Ystäviä, ylittää kulttuurirajoja ja muuttaa elämiä.

Pohjois- ja Etelä-Euroopan kveekarit hiljentyvät yhdessä
Helsingin ja Barcelonan hartauskokoukset tapaavat Maailman kveekaripäivän kunniaksi internetin välityksellä su 3.10 klo 11.30 Suomen aikaa. Ohjelmassa ainakin tosiimme tutustumista ja muuta sanallista jakamista & hiljainen hartaus.
Helsingissä kokoonnumme tuolloin poikkeuksellisesti Rauhanaseman (Veturitori 3) yläkerran kirjastossa. Tilaisuus saattaa kestää hieman normaalia sunnuntaihartauttamme pidempään, esim. 1,5h yhteensä.

The Young Adult Leadership Programme at Woodbrooke is now taking applications for the 2016-17 programme. The programme is now in its fifth year and there is a small, but growing, group of Young Adult Friends
who have completed the programme – one of last year’s participants said: An amazing opportunity for self-reflection, getting to know young adult Quakers, learning more about Quakerism and thinking about what we ourselves have to give.
The programme gives you the opportunity to develop a small learning community with other Young Adult Friends and consider topics such as Quaker history, Quaker processes, concerns, testimony, following your leading, using Quaker values in the secular workplace, presentation skills, teambuilding and much more; and also an opportunity to work in the garden
at Woodbrooke for half a day.
It is a part-time one year programme and consists of a 10 day residential in July 2016, a weekend in February 2017 – at Swarthmoor Hall – and a final 7 day residential in July 2017. The summer residentials overlap so you would be here with the previous group in July 2016 etc.
The dates for YALP 2016-17 are: 14-24 July 2016 3-5 February 2017 2-9 July 2017
The cost is £1750, which may sound high to you, but please don’t let this
put you off applying. We have some bursary funds at Woodbrooke, and there
are Quaker trusts willing to fund participants on YALP and many local or
area meetings – as well as Young Friends General Meeting – will have funds
available. I’d be happy to give guidance and support with fundraising.
Suomen Kveekarien Uskonnollinen Seura järjesti yhteistyössä Rovalan setlementin kanssa 3.-4.10.2015 viikonlopputapahtuman Lapin jälleenrakentamisen 70-vuotisen muiston kunniaksi. Samalla Rovaniemellä juhlistettiin jokavuotista maailman kveekaripäivää.
Lapin sota kesti syyskuun puolivälistä vuoden 1944 loppuun ja sodan loppuvaiheessa jäljellä olivat tuhotut ja poltetut kylät, kaupungit, kodit, sairaalat, sillat ja saunat. Suomen aseveljeys saksalaisten kanssa vaikeutti kansainvälisen avun saamista Suomeen sodan jälkeen ja American Friends Service Committee (Amerikan Kveekareiden avustusjärjestö) oli ainoa järjestö, joka sai luvan Yhdysvaltojen hallitukselta suorittaa huoltotyötä Suomessa. Kveekarit pistivät pystyyn työleirejä yhteistyössä Suomen Huolto ry:n ja Suomen Punaisen Ristin Lapin paikallisosaston kanssa. Työleirejä järjestettiin Lapissa vuosina 1945 – 55; amerikkalaiset kveekarit olivat Lapissa vuosina 1945-47.
Viikonlopun kestäneeseen tapahtumaan otti osaa useita kveekaritoimijoita ja omien alojensa asiantuntijoita. Kansainvälisten kveekarijärjestöjen AFSC (American Friends Service Committee ), QUNOn (Quaker United Nations), EMES (European and Middle East Section) edustajat muistojaan ja nykypäivän kokemuksiaan kveekarien kansainvälisestä avustustyöstä tänä päivänä.

Työleireistä ja niiden seurauksena syntyneestä Viittakiven opistosta kertoi Viittakiven opiston entinen apulaisrehtori ja työleirikonkari Jorma Reinimaa.
Jonathan Lutz kertoi isänsä Howard Lutzin kokemuksiin ja arkistoihin nojaten työleireistä
Pentti Lemmetyinen kertoi Setlementtiliiton ja kveekareiden yhteisestä historiasta
Ruotsalainen Annika Holsing valotti Ruotsin kveekareiden osuutta työleireillä sekä näiden yhteistyötä Ruotsin setlementtiliikkeen kanssa.
Lapin yliopiston Feeniks-hankkeen tutkijat Anniina Koivurova ja Tiina Harjumaa avasivat osallistujille omaa kveekareihin ja kveekariuteen kohdistuvaa tutkimustaan
ja työleirien seurauksena syntyneen KVT ry:n toiminnasta kertoi järjestön puheenjohtaja Emmi Ruohonen.
Viikonlopputapahtumassa muisteltiin työleirien aikaansaamaa henkistä ja aineellista hyvää ja luotiin katsausta, mihin kaikkeen se on johtanut myöhempinä aikoina. Paitsi menneeseen, mukana oli myös katsanto tulevaan: minkälaista yhteistyötä Suomen kveekarit ja setlementtiliitto ja/tai muut yhteistyötahot voisivat tehdä tänä päivänä ihmisten hädän lievittämiseksi. Rauhantyötä ja yhdessä elämisen mallia tarvitaan edelleen, ei vähiten uusien kansainvaellusten kynnyksellä, pakolaisten ja maahanmuuttajien kohtaamisessa sekä kantaväestöä koettelevien yhteiskunnallisten murrosten aiheuttamien koettelemusten keskellä. Kveekareilla oli keskeinen osa Lapin jälleenrakennuksessa ja kansainvälisen yhteistyön ja rinnakkaiselon rakentamisessa Viittakiven opiston kautta. Kansainväliset kveekarijärjestöt ovat tunnettuja rauhantyöstään, humanitaarisesta avusta, työstä lapsisotilaiden kuntouttamisessa ja vankiloissa olevien naisten ja lasten aseman parantamisessa sekä kestävään kehitykseen suuntautuvista ponnisteluistaan kansainvälisen politiikan saralla.

Remembering Quaker relief work in Finnish Lapland 1945 – 47; looking at current and future challenges

The American Friends’ Service Committee (AFSC) and the Finnish Christian Settlement Foundation had a crucial role in reconstructing Finnish Lapland which was totally destroyed and burned at the end of WWII. Quakers organized work camps 1945 – 47 for relief and reconstruction and many fruits were born from that work.
Friends in Finland (a small group of about 35 members and active attenders) co-hosted a weekend seminar in Rovaniemi, (a town in Finnish Lapland) together with the Finnish Christian Settlement Foundation, in October 2015, to commemorate 70 years since the start of the work camps for relief and reconstruction.
Our vision for the event was to look back, celebrate and learn from history in order to find new light for the present and the future. By remembering the work been done and looking at what came out of that initial impetus by Friends and others in America, we aimed to see what the role could be for our Quaker community in Finland today. What could be our work together with the Settlement movement? Where are we needed and called to serve?
The weekend was divided into two sections: Saturday focused on the Quaker work camps in Lapland in 1945 – 47. We will also looked at the co- operation between the Finnish Settlement movement and Friends in Finland in the past and worked together to see what our future cooperation could be. Sunday the 4th of October celebrated the International Quaker Day. Representatives from international Quaker organizations to spoke to the audience about their work. Marisa Johnson from EMES ( www.fwccemes.org) , Shan Cretin from AFSC (www.afsc.org ), and Jonathan Woolley from Quaker United Nations Organisation Geneva, QUNO (www.quno.org ) are shared experiences about Quaker service around the world.
