The Young Adult Leadership Programme at Woodbrooke is now taking applications for the 2016-17 programme. The programme is now in its fifth year and there is a small, but growing, group of Young Adult Friends
who have completed the programme – one of last year’s participants said: An amazing opportunity for self-reflection, getting to know young adult Quakers, learning more about Quakerism and thinking about what we ourselves have to give.
The programme gives you the opportunity to develop a small learning
community with other Young Adult Friends and consider topics such as Quaker
history, Quaker processes, concerns, testimony, following your leading,
using Quaker values in the secular workplace, presentation skills,
teambuilding and much more; and also an opportunity to work in the garden
at Woodbrooke for half a day.
It is a part-time one year programme and consists of a 10 day residential
in July 2016, a weekend in February 2017 – at Swarthmoor Hall – and a final
7 day residential in July 2017. The summer residentials overlap so you
would be here with the previous group in July 2016 etc.
The dates for YALP 2016-17 are: 14-24 July 2016 3-5 February 2017 2-9 July 2017
The cost is £1750, which may sound high to you, but please don’t let this
put you off applying. We have some bursary funds at Woodbrooke, and there
are Quaker trusts willing to fund participants on YALP and many local or
area meetings – as well as Young Friends General Meeting – will have funds
available. I’d be happy to give guidance and support with fundraising.

Kokouksemme alkaa yhteisellä brunssilla klo 10 (ilmoittautuminen brunssille etukäteen).

Kokouksen esityslista on ja tarkemmat saapumisohjeet on toimitettu erikseen sähköpostitse kokousviikolla. Kokouksessa käydään läpi mm. vuoden 2015 toiminta ja talous. Mikäli haluat kokouksessa esille otettavaksi jonkin aiheen, ilmoitathan siitä etukäteen, niin laitamme sen asialistalle.
Eräs niistä asioista, jota saamme Tampereella yhdessä tuumailla, on elokuussa (12.-14.8) järjestettävä Suomen kveekarien kesätapahtuma Kangasalla Ilkon kurssikeskuksessa.
Syksystä 2015 lähtien Tampereen hiljaisen hartauden ryhmä on laajentanut kokoontumistaan joka viikkoiseksi. Hiljaiseen hartauteen pääsee nyt siis mukaan joka lauantai Pyynikillä klo 14.
Lisäksi syksyn mittaan osallistujissa heräsi toiveita yhteiseen, hieman keskustelevampaa kokoontumiseen hiljaisen hartauden lisäksi. Tästä lähti käyntiin opintopiiri, jossa keskustellaan ja tutkitaan yhdessä kveekariuteen liittyviä aiheita. Aiheet ovat ryhmän päätettävissä ja mukaan pääsee ilmoittautumatta. Kokoontumiset tapahtuvat kuukauden ensimmäisenä viikonloppuna Pyynikin pappilalla klo 13 ennen hiljaisen hartauden alkamista klo 14.
19.-27. tammikuuta järjestettiin maailmanlaajuinen kveekareiden yleiskokous Pisacissa, Perussa. Suomen vuosikokouksesta tapahtumaan osallistui Jane Rose. Saamme Janelta myöhemmin vielä tarkemman kertomuksen matkastaan, mutta ensialkuun jaamme kokemuksia tapahtuman yhdessä laatiman loppuepistolan kautta.

To all Friends Everywhere,
We send loving greetings to you from Pisac in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We were blessed with both sunshine and rain. As we gathered together we lifted our eyes to the mountains and lifted our hearts to God
From 19 to 27 January over 320 men and women from 37 countries, 77 Yearly Meetings, 8 independent Monthly Meetings, and 2 worship groups, speaking dozens of languages met to consider the theme “Living the transformation: creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God (Romans 8:19).”
Our time together started in sadness at those who were delayed in their journeys or prevented from joining us – we felt a gap in our gathering the shape of God. Later, as we were joined by Friends from Kenya and welcomed local Friends from Peru and Bolivia, we felt the full fellowship among us. We were complete.
Many of the messages shared in our worship, speaking to the theme of transformation were both moving and uplifting: we were challenged to be transformed in ways leaving us more faithful to God’s purposes individually, as meetings/churches and as a World Family of Friends.
Our speakers emphasised the process of transformation. One spoke of spiritual transformation using the image of a heart transplant and what it means to be given the heart of Jesus. In this transplant of the heart we become agents of change who show the love of Christ in the world. Another image we were given was that of a seed pod. Each pod contains the past, present and future, showing us how we remain connected to our past even as we look to the future, as God gathers us into one grand story.
We heard the message that we must be open and available to God, making space in our hearts, our communities and our churches/meetings. Transformation often finds us when we’re not seeking or expecting it. We must be willing to be vulnerable and open our hearts in order to undergo the change we want to see.
As we gathered we not only spoke of transformation, we invited it and created spaces for God to make it happen. Many of us experienced it while we were here. We found ourselves broken open and touched by the Living Spirit of Christ.
We are the children of God. We are who creation has been waiting for. We are called to reveal ourselves in our lives and in the work we do with our hearts and our hands. Although God can fill our hearts, God has no hands but ours to heal this broken world. We can be salt and light shining to the world and declaring the love of God.
As Quakers our faith is inseparable from our concern to care for all life on earth. We are reminded of the Kabarak call for Peace and Eco-Justice and the need to redouble our efforts now. We call on Friends everywhere to take practical actions to sustain life on Earth.
Listening together in our home groups, workshops, and consultations, where two or three languages were spoken, opened up countless opportunities to pray, sing, ask difficult questions, learn, cry and laugh together. We have hurt each other with our words when we have spoken without love but this is a human failing and we have also experienced the healing power of Christ’s love.
We learn from each other’s ways of connecting with God; each offering of worship held within it the opportunity for the Spirit to move and speak and sing. Sharing worship in this way enables us to recognise that we must both listen to, and speak to God.
The presence of so many young adult Friends among us has been a blessing. We heard their moving testimony and experienced their inspirational leadership. As we go back to our churches and meetings we must allow this ministry and leadership to flourish.
We are different. We came together as a diverse collection of Friends. We were challenged by our differences. This challenge is not always comfortable but it is one we welcome.
We are one. We are one in the spirit of God which does not wash away or hide our differences, but allows us to celebrate them and enables us to move beyond the spiritual boundaries that may separate us. We are able to do this by coming together in worship where, while its form may be unfamiliar, God was present throughout. Through listening deeply and tenderly to each other and to God we reached a place where we can hear and sense where the words come from even when we may not understand the tongue they are spoken in.
We are Friends. In making the choice to come together and be willing to share deeply, pray boldly, and listen lovingly together, we seek to move beyond our differences, see beyond our labels and find ways to connect with each other. The work of FWCC depends on us all. In order to continue it, we encourage Friends, meetings/churches and Yearly Meetings to contribute financially to and participate in building connections between Friends.
As we leave here we will carry the love we have received from each other and from God in our hearts.
Suomen Kveekarien Uskonnollinen Seura järjesti yhteistyössä Rovalan setlementin kanssa 3.-4.10.2015 viikonlopputapahtuman Lapin jälleenrakentamisen 70-vuotisen muiston kunniaksi. Samalla Rovaniemellä juhlistettiin jokavuotista maailman kveekaripäivää.
Lapin sota kesti syyskuun puolivälistä vuoden 1944 loppuun ja sodan loppuvaiheessa jäljellä olivat tuhotut ja poltetut kylät, kaupungit, kodit, sairaalat, sillat ja saunat. Suomen aseveljeys saksalaisten kanssa vaikeutti kansainvälisen avun saamista Suomeen sodan jälkeen ja American Friends Service Committee (Amerikan Kveekareiden avustusjärjestö) oli ainoa järjestö, joka sai luvan Yhdysvaltojen hallitukselta suorittaa huoltotyötä Suomessa. Kveekarit pistivät pystyyn työleirejä yhteistyössä Suomen Huolto ry:n ja Suomen Punaisen Ristin Lapin paikallisosaston kanssa. Työleirejä järjestettiin Lapissa vuosina 1945 – 55; amerikkalaiset kveekarit olivat Lapissa vuosina 1945-47.
Viikonlopun kestäneeseen tapahtumaan otti osaa useita kveekaritoimijoita ja omien alojensa asiantuntijoita. Kansainvälisten kveekarijärjestöjen AFSC (American Friends Service Committee ), QUNOn (Quaker United Nations), EMES (European and Middle East Section) edustajat muistojaan ja nykypäivän kokemuksiaan kveekarien kansainvälisestä avustustyöstä tänä päivänä.

Työleireistä ja niiden seurauksena syntyneestä Viittakiven opistosta kertoi Viittakiven opiston entinen apulaisrehtori ja työleirikonkari Jorma Reinimaa.
Jonathan Lutz kertoi isänsä Howard Lutzin kokemuksiin ja arkistoihin nojaten työleireistä
Pentti Lemmetyinen kertoi Setlementtiliiton ja kveekareiden yhteisestä historiasta
Ruotsalainen Annika Holsing valotti Ruotsin kveekareiden osuutta työleireillä sekä näiden yhteistyötä Ruotsin setlementtiliikkeen kanssa.
Lapin yliopiston Feeniks-hankkeen tutkijat Anniina Koivurova ja Tiina Harjumaa avasivat osallistujille omaa kveekareihin ja kveekariuteen kohdistuvaa tutkimustaan
ja työleirien seurauksena syntyneen KVT ry:n toiminnasta kertoi järjestön puheenjohtaja Emmi Ruohonen.
Viikonlopputapahtumassa muisteltiin työleirien aikaansaamaa henkistä ja aineellista hyvää ja luotiin katsausta, mihin kaikkeen se on johtanut myöhempinä aikoina. Paitsi menneeseen, mukana oli myös katsanto tulevaan: minkälaista yhteistyötä Suomen kveekarit ja setlementtiliitto ja/tai muut yhteistyötahot voisivat tehdä tänä päivänä ihmisten hädän lievittämiseksi. Rauhantyötä ja yhdessä elämisen mallia tarvitaan edelleen, ei vähiten uusien kansainvaellusten kynnyksellä, pakolaisten ja maahanmuuttajien kohtaamisessa sekä kantaväestöä koettelevien yhteiskunnallisten murrosten aiheuttamien koettelemusten keskellä. Kveekareilla oli keskeinen osa Lapin jälleenrakennuksessa ja kansainvälisen yhteistyön ja rinnakkaiselon rakentamisessa Viittakiven opiston kautta. Kansainväliset kveekarijärjestöt ovat tunnettuja rauhantyöstään, humanitaarisesta avusta, työstä lapsisotilaiden kuntouttamisessa ja vankiloissa olevien naisten ja lasten aseman parantamisessa sekä kestävään kehitykseen suuntautuvista ponnisteluistaan kansainvälisen politiikan saralla.

Helsingin hartausryhmässä teemme valoeksperimenttiä yhdessä joka parillisen kuukauden ensimmäinen sunnuntai hiljaisen hartauskokouksen tilalla, eli sunnuntaisin klo 11 Rauhanasemalla Helsingissä.

Remembering Quaker relief work in Finnish Lapland 1945 – 47; looking at current and future challenges
Weekend seminar at Rovaniemi 3.-4. October 2015.
The American Friends’ Service Committee (AFSC) and the Finnish Christian Settlement Foundation had a crucial role in reconstructing Finnish Lapland which was totally destroyed and burned at the end of WWII. Quakers organized work camps 1945 – 47 for relief and reconstruction and many fruits were born from that work.
Friends in Finland (a small group of about 35 members and active attenders) co-hosted a weekend seminar in Rovaniemi, (a town in Finnish Lapland) together with the Finnish Christian Settlement Foundation, in October 2015, to commemorate 70 years since the start of the work camps for relief and reconstruction.
Our vision for the event was to look back, celebrate and learn from history in order to find new light for the present and the future. By remembering the work been done and looking at what came out of that initial impetus by Friends and others in America, we aimed to see what the role could be for our Quaker community in Finland today. What could be our work together with the Settlement movement? Where are we needed and called to serve?
The weekend was divided into two sections: Saturday focused on the Quaker work camps in Lapland in 1945 – 47. We will also looked at the co- operation between the Finnish Settlement movement and Friends in Finland in the past and worked together to see what our future cooperation could be. Sunday the 4th of October celebrated the International Quaker Day. Representatives from international Quaker organizations to spoke to the audience about their work. Marisa Johnson from EMES ( www.fwccemes.org) , Shan Cretin from AFSC (www.afsc.org ), and Jonathan Woolley from Quaker United Nations Organisation Geneva, QUNO (www.quno.org ) are shared experiences about Quaker service around the world.
